Fishing on the Sound:
(*) "Long Island Sound is a fishing wonderland. Nurtured by many rivers and streams, dotted with islands and reefs, sparkling with currents and eddies, the sheltered estuaries of the Sound provide the habitat for an exciting variety of food and game fish.
The rivers and coves host populations of winter flounder in the spring and fall, while summer months find striped bass and bluefish cruising the same areas searching out crabs, shellfish and small bait fish. Deeper waters contain other ground fish such as tautog (blackfish), scup (porgies) and black sea bass.
Striped bass growing to trophy wait of 60 pounds and more move into western Long Island Sound from the Hudson River in early spring, while separate stocks from southern waters migrate up the Atlantic Coast to invade the eastern end. Many remain through the hot summer months, providing spectacular fishing action before departing around Thanksgiving. Bluefish explode onto the Sound scene in early May, ravaging bait schools and tearing apart tackle--adding to the incurable epidemic known as fishing fever."
